Gentle Somatic Yoga

Gentle Somatic Yoga® is a therapeutic movement practice designed to help you reconnect with your body, release chronic tension, and promote deep healing from within. Unlike traditional yoga that often emphasizes achieving poses, GSY focuses on retraining muscle groups—inviting you to slow down, listen inward, and reset your nervous system through mindful exploration.

The Heart of GSY

At its core, GSY is about creating new patterns in the brain and body. Created by James Knight and informed by the work of somatic pioneer Thomas Hanna, this practice blends classic yoga postures with somatic education techniques. Movements are typically done lying down or seated and are intentionally slow and subtle—perfect for those recovering from injury, dealing with chronic pain, or seeking to improve.

Why Practice GSY?

The goal of Gentle Somatic Yoga® a is nervous system regulation, muscular freedom, and whole-body healing. As you practice, you may notice:
  • Relief from chronic tightness or pain
  • Increased mobility and flexibility
  • Enhanced athletic or everyday performance
  • A deep sense of calm and embodied presence
